Sonora is the county seat of Sutton County in the Edwards Plateau country of west-central Texas, in the sheep and Angora goat ranching land of the southwestern Hill Country. The Caverns of Sonora are a remarkable limestone cave system known for extremely detailed and unusual speleothem formations, and are among the more significant cave systems in Texas. Sutton County is a remote and sparsely populated county on the southwestern plateau, approximately 75 miles southeast of Del Rio along the I-10 corridor. The community serves the ranching population of the surrounding county and provides services for I-10 travelers in this remote part of the state. The limestone plateau terrain at roughly 2,100 feet elevation has mesquite, cedar, and native grasses in the semi-arid environment. One course serves this small Edwards Plateau community in the limestone plateau terrain of Sutton County.
