Modesto is the county seat of Stanislaus County and the main commercial hub of the San Joaquin Valley between Sacramento and Fresno. The city sits at roughly 90 feet elevation on the flat valley floor at the center of the surrounding agricultural region. Stanislaus County's agricultural economy includes almonds, dairy products, walnuts, and row crops. Modesto serves as the administrative, retail, healthcare, and entertainment center for a wide surrounding area. State Route 99 runs through the city, and Highway 132 provides east-west connectivity. The city has a downtown with the Gallo Center for the Arts and a concentration of retail and dining. Modesto is roughly 90 miles south of Sacramento and 90 miles east of San Francisco Bay. Several colleges and a regional medical center contribute to the city's employment base.
