Monterey is a city in Monterey County on the southern end of Monterey Bay, at the base of the Monterey Peninsula. The city serves as the county seat and a center for coastal tourism, military activity, and commercial fishing. The Naval Postgraduate School is located in Monterey and is a significant employer and educational institution. The Monterey Bay Aquarium on the former Cannery Row district is a major visitor destination drawing tourists from throughout the country. The city has a compact downtown and a mix of residential neighborhoods on the surrounding hills and the flat coastal area near the bay. Monterey is accessible from State Route 1, which runs along the coast, and State Route 68, which connects the peninsula to Salinas and the agricultural interior. The bay here supports a diverse marine ecosystem and a charter fishing fleet.
