Dalhart is the county seat of Hartley County in the far northwest corner of the Texas Panhandle, a ranching and agricultural community near the Cimarron River. Dalhart is in one of the highest elevation areas of the Texas Panhandle at roughly 3,900 feet, where the flat Llano Estacado transitions to the slightly broken terrain near the New Mexico and Oklahoma borders. The XIT Ranch, one of the largest ranches in US ranching lore, was centered in this area, and the XIT Rodeo and Reunion is an annual celebration of that ranching heritage. Dalhart is in a county where cattle ranching and wheat production are the dominant activities. The community is remote, at the convergence of US 87 and US 54. One course serves this remote Panhandle community.
