Quanah is the county seat of Hardeman County in the northwest Texas plains near the Red River, bearing the name of Quanah Parker, the last chief of the Kwahadi Comanche. Hardeman County has connections to the Comanche Nation that was one of the dominant forces on the southern plains, and the community's name honors the Comanche leader who navigated the transition to reservation life in the late nineteenth century. The red clay country and the Medicine Mounds to the south are significant landforms in Hardeman County, with the mounds being of spiritual significance to the Comanche people. Quanah is approximately 60 miles north of Childress on US 287, in the open red clay plains near the Oklahoma border. One course serves the Quanah community in the open red clay terrain of Hardeman County.
