Snyder is the county seat of Scurry County in west-central Texas, an oil and agricultural community east of Midland on the US 84 corridor. Scurry County is known for the Canyon Reef oil discovery of 1948 that created a significant production boom in west-central Texas and made Scurry County one of the major oil-producing counties of the era. Western Texas College is in Snyder and provides two-year academic and vocational education. The community is at roughly 2,300 feet elevation in the west Texas plains, in the gently varied terrain of the upper Colorado River drainage between Abilene and Lubbock. The flat plains terrain and the occasional mesquite and native grass landscape characterize the area. Two courses serve the Snyder community in the flat to gently varied terrain of west-central Texas.
