Bishop is the county seat of Inyo County on the east side of the Sierra Nevada, in the Owens Valley at roughly 4,150 feet elevation. The city occupies a broad valley between the Sierra Nevada to the west and the White Mountains to the east, in one of the longer north-south valleys in the interior West. Inyo County extends from the Mono County line south to the San Bernardino and Kern county lines, encompassing a long corridor of eastern Sierra terrain. The local economy centers on outdoor recreation, tourism, and services for travelers on US Highway 395. Bishop serves as a supply point for climbers heading to the nearby granite formations of the Sierra Nevada and for those passing through the Owens Valley toward Death Valley to the south. The Sierra crest rises steeply west of the city, with peaks exceeding 13,000 feet above the valley floor. The city has a compact downtown and substantial commercial presence for a county seat of its size.
