Palmdale is a city in Los Angeles County in the Antelope Valley, north of the San Gabriel Mountains in the Mojave Desert. The city occupies flat desert terrain at roughly 2,700 feet elevation on the valley floor, and is one of the two main urban centers of the Antelope Valley along with Lancaster to the north. Los Angeles County's Antelope Valley communities, including Palmdale, have grown substantially in recent decades as less expensive residential areas within the county. Air Force Plant 42, a major aerospace production and test facility adjacent to the Palmdale Regional Airport, is a significant employer. State Route 14 provides the main highway connection south to the main Los Angeles freeway system. The California High-Speed Rail project has a planned station in Palmdale.
