Between these anchors, Nevada's interior provides golf in improbable places: a nine-hole course in Round Mountain serving a remote gold mining community; municipal layouts in Elko's shadow of the Ruby Mountains; Mesquite's surprising cluster of resort courses drawing Utah visitors across the state line; West Wendover's Toana Vista overlooking the Bonneville Salt Flats. These courses define a particular kind of western American golf — practical, unassuming, set against landscapes of extraordinary scale and silence. Nevada's golf identity is impossible to reduce to a single archetype: the glittering resort excess of Las Vegas and the honest nine-hole municipal in a Great Basin mining town coexist under the same state flag, separated by terrain that reminds visitors how large and varied this desert landscape truly is.
