Golf in Utah

Utah combines more distinct golf environments than any other state in the American West — from the year-round desert warmth of St. George's red rock canyons to the high-alpine meadows of Park City and Heber Valley, from the irrigated corridor of the Wasatch Front to the remote canyon-country courses at Moab and Green River. With 116 courses spread across a state of remarkable geographic diversity, Utah offers golfers a range of experiences that no single summary can fully capture.

The Wasatch Front is the state's population spine, running north to south from Ogden through Salt Lake City and Provo to the Point of the Mountain. More than 80 percent of Utahns live within this corridor, and the concentration of municipal and private courses along the valley floor and mountain bench reflects that density. Salt Lake County alone operates more than a dozen courses under its county golf system, supplemented by private clubs, resort courses, and the Salt Lake City municipal portfolio. The Front's elevation — ranging from 4,200 feet on the valley floor to 5,000 feet on the bench — means every drive carries farther than golfers from sea-level regions expect.

South of the main corridor, St. George has established itself as one of the American Southwest's premier golf destinations. Washington County's courses cluster in a small geographic area, all benefiting from a year-round desert climate where January rounds are routine and summer mornings are playable before midday heat peaks. The red sandstone formations, lava rock outcroppings, and proximity to Zion National Park create a visual context for golf that has no rival in the region. Courses like The Ledges in Ivins, Entrada at Snow Canyon in Santa Clara, and Sand Hollow Resort in Hurricane have attracted national attention.

The mountain resort belt — Park City, Heber Valley, and Wasatch County — offers a third distinct character. Courses here sit at 5,500 to 7,000 feet, delivering cool summer temperatures, aspen-lined fairways, and mountain scenery typically associated with Colorado. Soldier Hollow Golf Course, the former Olympic biathlon venue near Midway, is perhaps the most historically unusual course in the state; the Promontory Club's multiple designer layouts east of Park City are among the most exclusive. Wasatch Mountain State Park's 36-hole complex makes the state park system a meaningful part of Utah's golf landscape.

The canyon country courses — Moab Golf Club among red rock formations, Green River State Park along the Colorado Plateau, Millsite Golf Course in Ferron's state park canyon — serve communities isolated from the Wasatch Front's recreational abundance, functioning as genuine community institutions.

Utah's low humidity and sunny skies make the playing environment consistently comfortable across the season, which runs May through October in most of the state and year-round in Washington County. At 5,000 feet, a golfer can expect 5 to 8 percent more carry than at sea level — club selection requires recalibration on every first visit.
